Newark (3)

Here I am Rune
Distance 0 miles
Total 1439 Locks 72 Tunnels
Running total mileage 2046.3 miles

We have taken advantage of the reasonable weather to enjoy the rest of the Newark Blues Festival and had a wander around the town. It has some interesting architecture and is quite a pleasant place, the only thing that slightly puzzles me about the place is why it isn’t a whole lot bigger than it is. When you look at the fact it is served by two completely separate railway lines, it was where two of the county’s major roads met (The Great North Road and Fosse Way) and it is on the navigable Trent it should have been a thriving hive of activity. If it once was there is little evidence of that left now. What they have as a football team play in a small village 6 miles away and for a number of years they had no team at all. For all that it seems that it would be a reasonable place to live.

Tomorrow we will press on towards Nottingham, the plan is to get to Hazleford Lock which is about 8 miles away, hardly a testing sort of day but then I have now booked a blood donor session in Nottingham for Thursday so don’t want to get there too soon.
