A couple of days blog blended into one here since it was
yesterday that we actually moved to our current location in Lincoln but today
when we have done a bit of exploring of the town. The weather has been superb
for September.
Arrival yesterday involved a very short hop from the
moorings alongside the main A46 road to her behind the main Student campus of Lincoln
University. It is a pretty large University but fairly quiet at the moment
since the students don’t come back until next week (13th).
The first part of exploring the town involved walking around
Brayford Pool, a fairly large lake in the town centre, now mostly taken up with
a marina. This was slightly spoiled when we reached the town and came across a
young cygnet obviously in some distress tangled up in fishing line. Since it
was in the river there wasn’t anything obvious that I could do to assist it so
tried calling the RSPCA, a complete and utter waste of time and money! Using
their number of 0300 1234999 I spent a frustrating 15 minutes (and about £4.50
call charges) listening to a load of patronising shit about how I shouldn’t
worry if I see a young chick on it’s own because the mother bird will be back
shortly provided that I don’t disturb it. What I actually had was a cygnet
wrapped up in fishing line that was likely to lose it’s back leg as the
circulation was cut off to it and probably die because it was unable to feed
itself due to the tangle of fishing line. Having caught a swan in the past I
would have been quite happy to assist the RSPCA officer to catch this one if
necessary but since I couldn’t get any reply on their phone I left the cygnet
to it’s probable death.
After that slight drama we continued up to have a look
around Lincoln Cathedral and Castle, quite an impressive building, inside Lincoln
Castle is the old prison which was interesting to wander around, the ticket we
had gives us the opportunity to return tomorrow to finish the castle tour.
