Newark

Here I am Rune
Distance 20.9 miles
Total 1438 Locks 72 Tunnels
Running total mileage 2045.4 miles

Probably our longest day’s distance yet, a creditable 20.9 miles (and a couple of locks). Of course this was achieved with the flooding tide pushing us along for a reasonable distance although things got a bit slower after 10.20am when the tide turned, but here we are finally off the tidal Trent and into Newark. The tide was not too strong and the trip went without any real dramas at all.

Entering Torksey Lock (at stupid o'clock in the morning) note both the red and green light lit!

I was considering that the last time I recall being in Newark was at the ripe old age of about 8 (over half a century ago) travelling to Yorkshire in the back of my father’s car, I imagine that it may have changed a bit. It is interesting that when you travel these days you rarely actually see the towns that you pass since most main roads by-pass all towns and cities, at the least the beauty of narrow-boating is that you still pass through the centre.

Tomorrow’s planned trip will only take us about a mile into the centre of Newark (currently moored on the outskirts).
