Here I am Rune
Distance 3 miles
Total 1436 Locks 72 Tunnels
Running total mileage 2015.8 miles
There was success today in getting the supply of the screws
that I needed to re-fit the ventilation mushroom to the roof of the boat and,
having only travelled three miles and stopping fairly early it gave me the
opportunity to fix it. Now that the sealant has cured all I need is a short
shower of rain to check that the leak has been cured. The trip out to the
supplier of the screws was quite pleasant, quiet lanes on the way out and an
old converted railway line alongside the River Withum on the way back. It was
interesting reading the history boards on display on the cycle path as one of
them relates an incident when a train travelling on the line was attacked by a
zeppelin. It was believed that the zeppelin pilot had seen the firebox of the
steam engine and used that as his target. The funny side of things was that the
train driver, quite sensibly stopped his train under a bridge to try to
obstruct the view of his firebox however the zeppelin pilot then believed that
he had pulled into Lincoln Station so threw everything he had around the area,
Fortunately there was nothing there and all the zeppelin really did was dynamite
plough the surrounding fields!!
Today’s trip was just a short cruise through the centre of Lincoln
and then out to moorings by the A46 and The Pyewipe Inn (Pyewipe is apparently a
local name for the Lapwing bird). The next couple of days will probably be only
short hops since there is no point getting back to the River Trent before
Friday as the tides are all at the wrong time of day. Even getting there on
Friday would mean a starting out time of 7.10am to go down to Cromwell Lock.
