East Marton

Here I am Rune
Distance 4.1 miles
Total 1240 Locks 70 Tunnels
Running total mileage 1758 miles

So once again just another short hop although the reason on this occasion was ‘rain stopped play’ since it began to rain after we had stopped for lunch so we decided not to press on. The forecast for tomorrow however is excellent, broken sunshine and little wind so hopefully we should make some real progress, at least as far as Gargrave and possibly even to Skipton.

Didn’t put in a post yesterday since we remained static to give me chance to go swimming and also went for a short bike ride back to Foulridge Tunnel (sort of a Duathlon!!). Couple of bits that I’d missed when travelling along the canal the previous day, first there was a ‘County Border’ sign but when I looked it up on the maps it isn’t really on the county border at all!
County Border sign (not on the county border!!)

Secondly I noticed that several of the bridges going back to Foulridge have ‘bridge rollers’ on them. These are vertical rollers against the wall of the bridge to prevent the towropes of horse-drawn boats wearing away the stonework of the bridge, interestingly they all still worked!

Where we are moored at the moment is part of the Pennine Way long distance footpath so a short walk along the towpath and we can claim to have walked (on) the Pennine Way.
