Barrowford (2)

Here I am Rune
Distance 0 miles
Total 1237 Locks 69 Tunnels
Running total mileage 1749.4miles

As planned we have remained here at Barrowford for a day to have a look at the Heritage Centre, my first thought was to learn the history of the Pendle Witches however it is a really fascinating story of the evolution of the house, Park Hill, from the 1600’s until the present day. The inside of the property has been pretty much gutted to reveal how and when all of the internal alterations were made, unusual and very detailed in the account. Really gave a feel of the experience of living in such a place.

The Pendle Witch display was less detailed but equally interesting given that, whilst I’d heard of them I knew little of the history, learnt that it wasn’t just women who were executed at Lancaster Castle for witchcraft, there were men executed as well. Final piece of education for the day was the revelation that the Society of Friends (Quakers) were formed following a walk by the founder of the Quakers, George Fox, to the top of Pendle Hill. We haven’t made that particular trek but we can see the hill just down from where we are moored.

Tomorrow will be a day to move on towards Barnoldswick and Skipton via Foulridge Tunnel, haven’t yet decided how far we will get.
