Whixall

Here I am Rune
Distance 6 miles
Total 636 Locks 20 Tunnels
Running total mileage 931.6miles

Once again reached the target for the day, Whixall on the Preece Branch. A bit of an anti-climax really since the end of the Preece Branch is just a marina with no visitor moorings (unless you book in advance) so it was just a case of cruising to the end, turning the boat around, and cruising back again. The point of interest here is the engineering involved in building a canal across what is effectively a peat bog. As we travel along Whixall the embankment is several feet above the surrounding countryside which is all peat bog. How they managed to build an embankment on that sort of terrain is anyone’s guess, I would think it involved a lot of hard work.
The main ‘entertainment’ for the crew is the regular lift bridges since we seem to have temporarily run out of locks, I think that the next lock we pass through will be at Frankton to get onto the Montgomery Canal, and that is about 10 miles away. I would think that our ‘target’ for tomorrow will be Ellesmere.
