Decided to take an extra day in Coventry to take in the sights, there is more here than I thought and probably the most interesting museum was the Coventry Museum of Transport (and it was free!). It does become a bit sad to see how Coventry was when it was a thriving car manufacturing area and how it has now pretty much lost its identity since the factories have closed. When you go into the main shopping area of a city and the largest number of ‘shops’ are bookmakers, pawnbrokers and closed down shops you know that a place is struggling. This all as a result of the ‘policy’ that we don’t really need manufacturing to create the country’s wealth, we’ll just rely on the financial sector, and look where that has led us!

Within the Transport Museum probably the most fascinating exhibits were the Thrust 2 and SSC, the vehicles which took the land speed record (SSC standing for Super Sonic Car since it broke the sound barrier). Coventry Cathedral was also an interesting visit but didn’t take the opportunity to go up the bell tower, which would have given a good viewpoint of Coventry and the surrounding countryside.

Tomorrow back up the Coventry Canal to the Ashby Canal for a trip up there before we head up to Tamworth.

Wouldn't be Coventry without at least one of Lady Godiva
