Fidwell Fen (Upware)

Here I am Rune

Distance 4.2 miles

Total 4117 Locks  264 Tunnels

Running total mileage 6,212.3 miles

Not a massively successful day, with only 4 miles under our belt. The intention was to have gone onto the Cambridge Lodes (Wicken, Burwell and Reach) but when we got to the lock, a man on the boat on the lock mooring told us the lock was shut and had gone into ‘flood mode’ whatever that meant. Given that the lock rises under a road bridge I suspect that if the water is too high, there is a danger of boats becoming trapped under the bridge.

Having been given that information we set off looking for an alternative mooring since there was clearly a large thunderstorm approaching. The mooring at Fidwell Fen was already full and originally I pressed on towards the next mooring, before realising that it was the other side of Bottisham Lock and we didn’t have a chance of getting there before the thunderstorm broke, so we breasted up alongside a narrowboat on the mooring to let the storm pass (more biblical rain!!). After that we decided to stay here and try moving on again tomorrow.
