Chester.....

Well, a pleasant day in Chester (until the rain moved in!). I have to say that I am now something of a fan of Chester, it is a city with character and history. We walked around the city walls (which at 2 miles counts as our movement for the day!). This was a fascinating experience as they are almost complete so you circumnavigate the city centre. Looking at the Water Tower it was impressive how far back the River Dee has receded, the Water Tower was built for ships travelling up the Dee to moor to for the purpose of unloading, now you can’t see the river from there. The split level shopping walkway was a curiosity as well, didn’t really notice it until we’d bought a sandwich for lunch and was looking for somewhere to sit and eat it. The raised gallery shopping area has been copied in a lot of towns but it looks as though Chester was the original since the building date from the 1600’s. As a final visitor attraction we also took a trip on a tour boat along the River Dee, may seem a curious thing to do since we spend all our time travelling by boat but, since it would be difficult to take our boat onto this section of river (tidal, weir to cross, more locks to do to get onto it) it seemed the easier option.

Tomorrow onto Ellesmere Port and the National Waterways Museum.
