Caughall

Here I am Rune
Distance 4.6 miles
Total 693 Locks 26 Tunnels
Running total mileage 1052.0 miles

Just over halfway back from Ellesmere Port to Chester we (I) decided to stop because I’d had enough of the rain and weed around the propeller (funny how much that happens when it’s raining!). We are out in the countryside and, bearing in mind we are less than 5 miles from Ellesmere Port, it is quite pleasant. We are also quite close to Chester Zoo but I’m not sure we can be bothered to visit.

Upon arrival at this mooring had a long and interesting chat with a guy two boats along who is a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers. Sounds a bit Pythonesque but he is in fact one of those people who create the rope ‘buttons’ that you see at the front and back of narrow boats. The technique looks fairly straightforward although he tells me that it takes an hour to create the centre of the button and then 3 hours to ‘wrap’ it in knots, so 4 hours’ work. On top of that he needs 55 metres of rope so I suppose that the final price of about £60 isn’t too bad a deal. Must try to take more care of ours when in locks.

Tomorrow we complete the trip into Chester probably for another 4 day stay, hope the weather improves.
