The technician at Calcutt agreed with me that if the old battery monitor worked on the wiring, the new one should as well. Contacted Midland Chandlers and asked for advice, they said come back and we’ll look at it with you. Unfortunately when I got back that had changed to “We’ll have to send the unit back to Victron for them to check it.If it’s faulty we’ll give you a credit for it, if not we’ll post it back to you”. Since our postal address is over a hundred miles from where the boat will be, having it posted back wasn’t a good option. To give final verification as to whether it was the unit or the wiring, I sat outside Midland Chandlers and completely fitted the unit using all bits from the box. Despite Vectron saying that all the components were interchangeable, it seemed that whilst the old monitor would work on the new electrical shunt, the new monitor would not work on the old one. With the new electrical shunt fitted, the unit powered up.

The result is that we’ve had a day cruising the bit of Grand Union between Braunston and Napton and back, I can think of worse bits of canal to have to cruise! Now we are back in action, tomorrow it’ll be off up towards Warwick.
