Rowington Green

Here I am Rune
Distance 4 miles
Total 1565 Locks 79 Tunnels
Running total mileage 2215.8 miles

Today we reached the reason for our trip up this section of canal as we walked across from our mooring at Tom O’ Wood Bridge to Lowsonford Top lock to view the Gormley statue. The reason for wanting to see it at this time is because it is due to be removed in May and it is unlikely that we will be in a position to see it again before then. The reason for the walk to get to it is because Rowington Top Lock is closed until 18th December and then immediately after Christmas, Bridge 37 at Kingswood Junction is closed from 4th January until 7th February so it won’t really be accessible by boat until February of next year by which time we’ll be making plans for where we are going once all of the stoppages finish.
The Anthony Gormley Statue....

.....apparently weighs in at 700kg

There are four other statues in this series (called LAND) at Clavell Tower, Kimmeridge Bay in Dorset (currently having been downed by heavy seas!), Lundy Island, on a Martello Tower at Aldeburgh, Suffolk and Saddell Bay in Argyle and Bute. Lowsonford is the only one not by the sea (or in the case of Kimmeridge Bay, under it!)

Tomorrow we will go up as far as Kingswood junction since that is the  nearest turning point then start heading back towards Warwick. Not sure when we’ll go back down the Hatton Flight but Sunday looks a good option in terms of weather.
