Stockton

Here I am Rune
Distance 6.1 miles
Total 1523 Locks 78 Tunnels
Running total mileage 2196 miles

Suitably stocked up with coal and with the cassettes emptied we have finally move on from Braunston having been there for 16 days, our longest in one place (other than a marina) for quite a while. It was nice to get back out into the countryside again although the weather could have been better. We did seem to get stuck behind another boat who was travelling exceptionally slowly for some reason. I’m not in any rush but when I’m catching him up on tick-over to me that is just a bit too slow.

The intention today was to stop before Calcutt locks but unfortunately all of the moorings were taken so we have had to come through the locks to moor outside of Vetnor Farm marina. Interesting how close up to wildlife you get on the cut, after mooring the crew pointed out a rat that was climbing a nearby tree. The tree is a crab apple tree and the rat in question clearly has quite a taste for crab apples since he spent the rest of the afternoon going up and down the tree, each time carrying a crab apple in his mouth, I have no idea what he was doing with them as I understand they are quite bitter to eat, perhaps he was making cider!!
Tomorrow it will be on to the Stockton Flight of locks provided that the weather isn’t too wet.
