Leigh (1)

Here I am Rune
Distance 0 miles
Total 1136 Locks 62 Tunnels
Running total mileage 1611.8miles

Today was our last standstill day until we get to Liverpool next Friday, for each of the next few days we will need to do about 8 miles, not a great distance but we will need to do it to stay on track to reach Aintree by Thursday.

The purpose of the standstill day today was for the opportunity for me to go swimming and also to enable the Sunday lunch to be cooked for lunchtime (if we travel during the day we have it in the evening.
Whilst walking to the swimming pool (at the back of Leigh Centurions Rugby League ground) I passed a mural under one of the canal bridge on which was written R.I.P Lauren Pilkington Smith. Always curious about these sort of shrines I did the internet research and found that it was a local girl who was murdered in July 2005. Reading the local newspaper archive on it the likelihood was that the murder was committed on the footpath that I had walked along to get to the swimming pool. The murderer was tried and convicted and is currently in prison and not eligible for parole until at least 2020, hopefully not until well after that.

Tomorrow we’re back on the move and the target is just beyond Wigan ‘pier’ so should hopefully include a photo of this famous landmark on tomorrow’s post.
