Barnby Dun

Here I am Rune
Distance 10.3 miles
Total 1292 Locks 70 Tunnels
Running total mileage 1841.9 miles

Not the ideal day for travelling, a bit more wind than was forecast with quite a lot of rain but we have still made it as far as Barnby Dun. Because it is so flat around here the wind can become a real irritation meaning that I end up having to steer the boat ‘crab style’ down the canal.
Probably the biggest bridge we have yet worked.

No great dramas on the way but a few pretty big lift bridges to work our way through. The boat that I was concerned about meeting on the way, passed us at our mooring before we set out this morning. The boat is called the ‘Humber Princess’ and having looked it up on the system it is 200 feet long and 20 feet wide, quite a behemoth compared to our ‘little’ RUNE which is 60 feet long and about 6feet 10 inches wide. The facet of the ‘Humber Princess’ that was curious was the fact that it has a wheelhouse that ‘ducks’ as it goes under the bridges (photo) although the skipper tends to leave it until the last minute before doing so.
The boat with the wheelhouse......

......that 'ducks' to go under bridges!

Tomorrow on through Doncaster to Sprotborough.
