Braunston (3)

Well we have moved today, just not very much! Since we want to call into Braunston Butchers tomorrow to stock up with various bits and pieces we wanted to remain in Braunston for a few more days so I took a walk along the towpath this morning to see what the state of play was as we got towards Braunston Turn. As things worked out there were three moorings available pretty much opposite The Boathouse pub, so that is where we are now moored. We are still within easy walking distance of Braunston and also within riding distance of Daventry but we are now on 14 day moorings so there is no immediate rush to move on.

The only point of interest today was the acquisition of a load of kindling for the fire. I had checked out the local supermarket who were selling a bag for about £5 but then when I went to the waste point to get rid of some rubbish I found someone had dumped a broken wooden pallet there. When cut up into kindling it is the equivalent of about 3 of the bags from the  supermarket so for a little bit of effort (cutting the wood up) I’ve saved about £15. Must look out for some more pallets!

  1. Just check the pallets, some are treated with Methyl-Bromide Fumigation which is quite harmful to health when burnt. Pallets usually have a stamp on hem and if you see MB then don't burn.

Pallets pre 2005 tend to be those as they have now been fazed out. They do burn very hot indeed too so watch that glass.

    1. Thanks for the advice, we started using old pallets for kindling last year when we could get them up the Engine Arm in Birmingham. I don't know how many pre-2005 pallets are still in circulation but, going back to my truck driving days and how regularly they were broken, I would hope not many.
