We are now back aboard after a spell ‘ashore’ from the
narrow-boat. Strictly speaking not much of my break was actually ashore since I
took the opportunity to do some sailing on the ‘lumpy stuff’ around Cornwall
and then across to Finistere in north-western France. The crew however went
walking around the Isle of Man so her break was actually ashore.
Some 'lumpy stuff' sailing! |
It’s funny but when we leave the boat to go home the first
thing that needs to be done is to tidy up the house since the garden goes
absolutely wild in our absence. Upon returning to the boat the first thing that
needs to be done is to tidy up the boat since various forms of wildlife (mainly
spiders) all move aboard. It’s amazing that in just three weeks the boat
becomes covered in spider webs, I don’t know what the state of the boat would
be if left for three months!
After tidying up the boat, the next task was to give the
engine a full service with an oil change, fuel filter change, air filter change
and general tinkering to try to make sure that the boat works OK on our
impending trip up the River Trent. It seems that the likely date for that is
going to be some time next week (Wednesday or Thursday) since at the moment it
is spring tides with the associated risk of an aegir on Sunday, Monday and
Tuesday. The tide times also aren’t particularly good until then since I need
to travel from Keadby to West Stockwith on the incoming tide and to do that at
the moment would need an unfeasibly early start (before 7am!). By Wednesday the
tide times become more sociable.
The travelled distance today is just from Blue Water Marina
back into Thorne to do some shopping and stocking up.
