Hayton

Here I am Rune
Distance 10.7 miles
Total 1347 Locks 71 Tunnels
Running total mileage 1936.4 miles

Whilst I do like the countryside of the Chesterfield Canal I would have to admit that progress is rather slow. The main problem is lack of water depth so we are only travelling at about 2mph, getting to the end is going to take some time! By the mounds of weed that have been dumped along the towpath as we go along I would think that weed has been something of a problem along here as well but there is a boat travelling along gathering up (and dumping) the weed so it hasn’t been too bad so far.

We have had quite a long day today but have at least reached Hayton which is about a third of the way along the canal (in distance that is, there are a lot of locks to deal with later). At least with the speed we are travelling I get the opportunity to fully enjoy the countryside. It has been a fairly quiet canal as well, we have passed one boat coming in the opposite direction and have had two boats going in the same direction, one of whom managed to overtake although he clipped our bow with his stern. Since his was a fibreglass boat and ours is good solid steel if any damage was caused it would have been to his boat.
