With a bit of assistance we set off through Ashline Lock quite early for us today, about 10.00am. We needed the assistance because we failed to get either the key to get into the lock compound or the special windlass needed to work the lock as we passed through Stanground Lock. Fortunately there were two boats moored ahead of us who were quite happy to supply the necessary tools to get through the lock.

The cruising through the Middle Levels was easier than I was expecting, plenty of depth of water and whilst there was some weed, we didn’t get any wrapped around the prop to slow us down. We seem to have been travelling at about 3.5 miles per hour given the time it took us to get here, so a similar rate of progress tomorrow should get us to Salter’s Lode in time for the tide.
