Aspley Basin, Huddersfield

Here I am Rune
Distance 2.7 miles
Total 2741 Locks  130 Tunnels
Running total mileage 3714.1 miles

We have surprised ourselves and managed to get all the way to Aspley Basin in Huddersfield from our starting point at Slaithwaite in a day. The last half mile into Huddersfield is however hard graft due to some very narrow channels, not a lot of water and finally someone’s duvet around the prop which brought proceedings to a complete halt for a bit. We have, however, now been told that the Quay Street lift bridge is broken so until that is fixed we cannot go any further. The mooring we have taken up for the night is in the middle of Huddersfield University and the guy moored in front of us tells us it is a good mooring with CCTV cameras all around.

How far we get tomorrow depends on how quickly the lift bridge is fixed although the defining moment for us will be getting to and through Red Doles lock, our first on the Huddersfield Broad Canal. This is one that we are going to have to pass through diagonally and if that fails, we’ll be needing to go all the way back through the tunnel!

Two rather narrow bit coming.......

.....into Huddersfield
