Norton Junction

Here I am Rune
Distance 5.1 miles
Total 468 Locks 9 Tunnels
Running total mileage 638.1 miles

A warm day’s travel today but no complaints from me, travelling in the sunshine is what narrow-boating should be all about.  The seven locks of the Buckby Flight is quite hard work for those operating the locks (rather than those of us steering the boat!) as each lock is quite deep which means that the gates are big and heavy. Fortunately we teamed up with a second boat after the first lock (there are 7 in total) which eased our way along. Stopped off at Whilton Marina Chandlery which is by the first lock to replace one or two minor breakages and get another canal map book (this time of Birmingham area).  We are now onto the Leicester Arm of the Grand Union which puts us about 20 miles from Foxton Locks and 41 miles from Leicester itself.
Shops for serious food shopping are becoming a bit thin on the ground in this area so our eyes lit up when we saw a sign for ‘Heart of the Shires’ shopping area, describing themselves as ‘supplying your essentials’. Apparently what they call ‘essential’ rather differs from what I’d call essential. To me essential means stuff like bread, milk, meat etc but to ‘Heart of the Shires’ ‘essential’ means Bridal wear, gardening stuff and flowers!!
