Had one of our changes of plan today and decided to stay in the Walsall Town arm for an extra day so that we would visit the fleshpots of Walsall! Surprisingly it was quite an interesting day’s stay as I can’t say that I’ve previously had a particularly rosy view of Walsall but, like a lot of places, it does have some hidden (or in the case of the art gallery, not so hidden) gems.

To start with the art gallery, of which Walsallians can be rightly proud. Wandering around I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted with paintings and sketches by the likes of Picasso, JMW Turner, Constable, Degas, Whistler, Monet, Manet and Goya. The sculptures were by Jacob Epstein amongst others. All in all it is quite an impressive display and the gallery itself is situated in a pretty good location, right by the canal.

I followed this by a visit to the house where Jerome K Jerome was born passing a former pub now a.. hem…Gentleman’s Club which still bears the scars of being bombed by a Zeppelin in January 1916. The story of this does show a small level of incompetent navigation by the Zeppelin pilots since they thought that they were bombing Liverpool. Apparently the town war memorial is built on the location that the bomb fell.

So after a day of art, literature and history tomorrow we move on.
