A rather slow trip back up the Glasson branch puts us onto the Lancaster canal main line, now heading towards Garstang. Since that is the nearest town with a reasonable sized supermarket for the weekend shop, that is where we will need to get to for tomorrow. Before leaving Glasson Basin we made the obligatory visit to Lancaster Port Smokery and I’ve stocked up on some smoked cheese (Brie and Cheddar). Talking to one of the locals this morning suggested that where we moored for the night wasn’t exactly ideal. I’d noticed that there was a sunken sea going boat behind us and when I spoke to the local I asked him how long it had been there. He advised me it had gone down 4 or 5 years ago when a westerly gale had whipped up waves in the basin (it is quite big) and driven the boat repeatedly against the dock wall until one of the timbers sprung (it was a wooden boat) and it then sank. Listening to what he said it occurred to me that in a strong westerly wind you’d be pinned against the dock wall and unable to get away, as luck would have it during our stay there was very little wind from any direction.

Tomorrow on to Garstang where, if we can find a mooring, we will stay for a day or two.
