We have now moved off the Basingstoke Canal and onto the River Wey although basically all that we have actually done is gone around Woking, we are now at the south-eastern side of it whereas before we were on the north-west.

The Wey seems a pleasant enough river although with variable depths. When we went from the Basingstoke onto the Wey the increase in depth was notable but within half a mile we were almost touching the bottom again. On the actual river stretches, as opposed to the River Wey Navigation, the depth is perfect and we were up to full cruising speed.

The area where some care is needed here is in the locks since, when going up, there are no side paddles only gate paddles to let the water in and they are quite ferocious! When opening them it is only necessary to open the paddle a fraction (about 1/10 ) to fill the lock, any more than that would give a reasonable chance of sinking the boat.

Tomorrow the forecast is excellent and we should move on to Guildford.
