A very pleasant trip up the Caldon Canal, as far as Endon today. It has some pretty tight curves and when I got to bridge 13 it all came back to me what a tight turn it was there (had to do a couple of reversing manoeuvres to get around). The only shame was that I didn’t properly read the info put out by CRT concerning the canal closure. I thought that the canal had already been closed beyond Hazlehurst locks on the Froghall arm, whereas it isn’t closed until Wednesday. If we’d got here a bit quicker we would have had time to get to Froghall before the closure came into force.
Have to say that the canal route has improved markedly since the last time we came up when there was still a lot of derelict building sites. Our guide book, which is an old one, also advised not mooring anywhere between Etruria and Engine Lock whereas the overall impression now is that the moorings would be safe, they have in fact installed a number of mooring rings on the way and, given what the areas now look like, I’d be content to moor there. It may also give some idea as to the change in the political landscape of Stoke on Trent as there has obviously been a lof of ‘gentrification’ taking place.
Tomorrow we’ll head off to the end of the Leek arm and take a few photos of the boat there a since it is one of the Silver Propeller locations, and then head back to the Park Lane service block where I’ve arranged to meet a marine engineer to look at our alternator.
When we went up the Caldon (years ago) we were picking our way over broken glass at Planet lock, and saw someone had taken a sledgehammer to one of the anti-vandal locks. There was a general air of dereliction - waste ground between the lock and run-down shops, but there was a big new health centre/pharmacy.
ReplyDeleteWe last came up here in 2014 and it was as you describe. They've solved the problem with vandalism to the anti vandal locks though....they've taken them all off, including those on the Stoke flight!
