Stoke on Trent

Here I am Rune
Distance 8.2 miles
Total 2638 Locks  122 Tunnels
Running total mileage 3646.5miles

The forecasted rain didn’t arrive until quite late (although I did get wet in it but we’d finished the locks by then). Since there is a festival on in Etruria tomorrow it has been quite busy along the canal to the extent that we found ourselves queuing at several of the locks. It’s not a problem since, unlike a traffic queue, it becomes something of a social event.

As planned we have reached Westport Park which, from previous experience, is quite a pleasant mooring and there are quite a lot of other boats here as well.

The only point of interest from the day is that the issue that I mentioned last time we came through Stoke locks, the difficulty of getting from lock 39 to the top lock 40 is still the same. You go into lock 39 and fill it from the pound above, once you’ve done that there isn’t enough water in the pound to get across to lock 40 so you have to empty the top lock to fill the pound up enough to get to the lock, seems a bit of a design flaw to me and not one I’ve encountered anywhere else.

Tomorrow the plan will be to get onto another ‘new’ canal, the Macclesfield and hopefully get as far as Congleton, having passed through Harecastle tunnel again.
