Marple (bottom of lock flight)

Here I am Rune
Distance 1.5 miles
Total 2667 Locks  123 Tunnels
Running total mileage 3692 miles

Well that seemed a day of graft! The Marple flight of locks took us 5 ¼  hours, which for 16 locks isn’t that good a pace. It seems that someone ahead of us was having difficulty getting one of the locks to fill and assumed that there was something behind the gate jamming it. He tried to resolve it by draining it and refilling it twice but the knock on effect was that, for those of us following him, there wasn’t enough water left in the pounds for us to get through them. The hold-up probably took over an hour to resolve so a fairer estimate for travelling time down Marple Flight should be more like 4 hours.

Tomorrow we make an early start to get through Stalybridge to the service moorings at Bywith Lock (hopefully).

A small amount of chaos at the top of Marple Flight

These locks are certainly deep
