Naburn Lock

Here I am Rune
Distance 14.1 miles
Total 2785 Locks  130 Tunnels
Running total mileage 3839.5 miles

At last we are back on the move having spent a lot longer at Selby than we originally intended. This is all down to the vagaries of the River Ouse which, over the past few days has been carrying a lot of freshwater down from the rain that we have had. What this has meant was that the incoming neap tides were barely enough to stem the flow of the river so it has been, pretty much constantly, flowing down from Naburn. For our boat this would make the trip from Selby to Nabourn a long and slow job against the current.

This morning however things improved in that we managed to ‘ride’ the incoming tide to within a couple of miles of Naburn meaning the trip took about 2 hours and 40 minutes (3 hours including getting into Naburn Lock). Going against the flow I would think it could easily have taken twice as long and burnt twice as much fuel. As it turned out it was a very pleasant cruise along, what was today, a very benign river. I’m not one for getting up early (and have already had an afternoon snooze) but it was actually quite picturesque travelling along the river.

The decisions to make tomorrow are whether we go and moor in York (about 5 miles upriver) or try to continue on to the next available mooring at Linton Lock (15.5 miles upriver). One would make a rather short day, the other would make quite a long day, particularly as we are still going into the current.
