Barmby on the Marsh

Here I am Rune
Distance 6.8 miles
Total 2800 Locks  130 Tunnels
Running total mileage 3918.9 miles

Well, after the call to the Barmby Tidal Barrage lock-keeper, it turned out that we were OK to come on up to the River Derwent today so, on quite a late tide (5.00pm) we have done so. It was quite a pleasant trip along the river although there was quite a lot of river disturbance on a couple of the quite sharp corners, but otherwise it was alright.

Getting into Barmby was a bit more challenging than getting into Selby Lock because alongside it is the automatically controlled sluices to monitor the levels of the River Derwent. As I aligned the boat to enter the lock, the sluices opened and caused quite a lot of turbulence in the lock mouth, steering in a straight line was a bit tricky. We did manage to get in without hitting anything and was given a 10/10 by the lock-keeper who apologised for the sluices opening at that particular moment but he said he had no control over it, it is all computer operated, so that’s alright then!

We will now be heading off up the Derwent and onto the Pocklington Canal (hopefully, since it also has short locks).

A perfect entry into Barmby Lock
