Here I am Rune
Distance 11.5 miles
Total 1765 Locks 86 Tunnels
Running total mileage 2542.6 miles
A fairly steady day today taking us to Napton Adkins lock, a
distance of 11.5 miles which is basically the entire summit pound of the canal
completed. For some inexplicable reason the water level in the pound was down
by about 6 inches, which doesn’t sound a lot but on a shallow canal is the
difference between running aground, or not. We didn’t do too badly but we were
following another boat who seemed to run aground on a lot of the bends of the
canal which slowed us down a bit. I would also have preferred to have stopped
for lunch a bit earlier but since we couldn’t get close in to the canal bank to
moor up it wasn’t going to happen and we had to press on.
I think that my hope of getting to Braunston by tomorrow is
beginning to unravel a bit. We still have a flight of 7 locks to do here, then
I want to go to Calcutt boats to refuel which will be down and back up another
lock, and when we get to the Napton bottom lock there are a couple of domestic
chores to complete so it looks very much as though it’s going to be Saturday before
we get to Braunston, on a Bank Holiday weekend, what are the chances of finding
a mooring?
