Hack Green

Here I am Rune
Distance 2.7 miles
Total 709 Locks 26 Tunnels
Running total mileage 1083.9 miles

A short shuffle along the canal brings us to Hack Green Locks where we intend to spend the next couple of days. The attraction, as I may have earlier mentioned, is the Secret Bunker which is the nuclear bunker where Government would have all scuttled to in the event of a nuclear war. We would have gone there today but for the fact that it is only open Wednesdays to Sundays during the winter, and in their terms since it is after 2nd November, it is winter. According to Tripadvisor it is certainly worth a visit.

On the subject of it now being ‘winter’ we stopped off at the chandlery in Nantwich to stock up on the essentials, so we now have a supply of smokeless fuel, kindling and a full tank of diesel so for at least the next 3 weeks or so we are pretty self-sufficient.

Since we got here quite early and I had a spare afternoon, took the opportunity to service the bike a bit by cleaning and re-greasing the front wheel bearing which was grating a bit when I rode to the supermarket in Nantwich, if the weather turn bad and we depend on the bike to get supplies, I don’t want it failing on me!

The one final pleasure on this piece of canal is that we are back into the region of narrow locks which are a lot easier to operate when there is just two of you than the broad locks in which the boat tends to drift around in the lock whilst it is filling.
So tomorrow to the Secret Bunker, hopefully I’ll attached some photos to the next posting.
