After the weekend in Gloucester we have moved just a few miles down the canal to Quedgeley which is really just another area of Gloucester. It’s interesting that the canal is now so deep that it is unnecessary to worry too much about slowing down when passing moored boats, at 4mph we barely rock moored boats. We have had a large cruiser come past at nearly 8 mph, that rocked the boat a bit.

I’ve stopped at our current location as I wanted to check out possible viewing points for next week’s Severn Bore, due on Sunday and Monday. The problem with the River Severn is that it’s banks are invariably tree lined so there aren’t that many good viewing points where you can see much river.I think I’ve found a couple of reasonable viewing points within a 15 minute walk of where we are currently moored, so we’ll stop off on the way back to watch the Bore.

For us, quite a long trek down into Gloucester Docks, the only moorings on the way are pub moorings so we had to press on to the docks with a four and a half hour continuous cruise from Upton on Severn to here. The set up in the docks reminds me a lot of Liverpool as there are restaurants,bars and museums around the docks and at the moment (9.30pm) the bar outside of which we are moored is still quite busy (although it is a Saturday night, so hardly unexpected).

I think the current plan is to stay here until Monday and then cruise slowly along the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal taking possibly about 5 days to get down to Sharpness.

Upton on Severn

So after getting in the weekend shopping, completing all of the domestic chores and had lunch, we eventually set off down the river towards Gloucester. I was hoping to get onto the river moorings at Worcester for the night and set off in the morning but it was pretty well full so we had to press on to Upton on Severn, the next town of any real size (with moorings) on the river. Having said that it was a very pleasant day on the river, fine but not too hot and virtually no wind. The depth is good so the speed was generally around 4.4mph, a lot quicker than we ever travel on the canal. At that speed it took us about 3 hours in total from leaving the mooring in Diglis basin, going through the two locks out onto the river and then about 10 miles downstream, all in all a reasonable day’s work (for us).

In the absence of any wind I quite enjoyed the river although it is a bit ‘samey’ in that I took some photos (below) btu can’t say for sure where it is since it all looks much the same.

Tomorrow we’ll press on down, probably to Gloucester docks since there isn’t much alternative mooring on the river itself.
